The Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department (PBCWUD) reminds residents that only toilet paper should be flushed into the wastewater system.

Toilet paper is designed to rapidly disintegrate upon entering the wastewater system, which allows water and waste to flow through the system with no impediment.

Items such as animal waste bags and wipes are often marketed as “flushable." However, these items do not break down rapidly upon entering the wastewater system, but instead are still intact hours, and often days, afterwards, which can lead to blockages in pipes and costly repairs, both for PBCWUD and, potentially, for homeowners.

Additionally, items such as dental floss and clothing often find their way into toilets and the wastewater pipes. These items, which do not break down, become tangled and clogs pipes and pumps that help maintain the integrity of the wastewater system.

The only way to ensure such clogs and potential back-ups won't occur is to only place toilet paper into your toilets.
