Rabies is a deadly disease, but you can protect your pet with a rabies vaccine.

When does my pet need a rabies vaccine?

  • Dogs, cats, and ferrets must get their first rabies vaccine by 4 months of age.
  • Your pet needs a booster shot 1 year after the first vaccine, even if the first vaccine was given when your pet was older.
  • After the booster, your pet is considered currently vaccinated right away.

When are future shots needed?

After the first booster, follow the schedule on the vaccine label. Rabies vaccines may need to be given every year or every 3 years, depending on the vaccine.

For example, if your pet gets a 3-year rabies vaccine, the next vaccine must be given on or before 3 years from the date of the previous shot.

What if my pet's vaccine is overdue?

Don't wait. Take your pet to a veterinarian and get the booster as soon as possible.

Your pet is considered currently vaccinated immediately after receiving the booster. After that, follow the regular 1-year or 3-year schedule on the vaccine label – ask your veterinarian which is better for your particular pet.

Keeping your pet's rabies vaccine up to date helps protect your pet, your family, and your community.

A licensed veterinarian can help you keep your pet on the correct vaccination schedule and maintain an accurate vaccination record.
