The Citizen's Criminal Justice Academy (CCJA), is an 11-week program for Palm Beach County residents, including a 6-week program for residents of the Glades areas. It offers an exclusive, behind the scenes look at the criminal justice system in Palm Beach County. Classes are held on Monday evenings from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm. The program is free of charge and includes a meal on most nights of class.
Participants will have the opportunity to:
- Meet Senior staff at Sheriff's Department
- Overview of the Criminal Justice Commission
- Tour the Palm Beach County Jail
- Check out Special Operations including the K-9 Unit, Swat Team, and others
- Learn about the Court System; meet Judges and hear about specialty courts
- Learn about the Clerk's Office and the function of the Clerk of Courts
- Learn about the State of Florida's Law Enforcement agencies
- Hear from Federal Agencies, DEA, FBI, ATF, and US Marshalls
- Learn about Juvenile Justice and Re-entry efforts
- Learn about Victim's Services and services for victims of crimes
- Hear from the Medical Examiner's office
- Learn about Crime Scene Investigations
- Learn about Homeland Security
- Hear from Federal Immigration Services
- Learn about Cyber-bullying and Internet Crimes
- Learn about Body worn cameras\
- Climb behind the wheel of a police cruiser
- Hear about innovation in officer training/Shoot Don't Shoot
- Learn about Use of Force, and why it is used
- Learn about Florida Department of Corrections
- Learn about Narcotics, Gangs, and Violent Crimes
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age, live or work in Palm Beach County, and be willing to undergo a criminal background check.
