County officials will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 24 to commemorate the opening of phase I of Canyon District Park, located at 8788 Senator Joe Abruzzo Avenue, west of Boynton Beach. The event will take place immediately after Palm Beach County’s Canyon Branch Library groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for 9:00 a.m. at 8802 Boynton Beach Boulevard.
“This park in our community will always represent a happy place; a place where children play, seniors gather and all members of a family can enjoy,” said County Commissioner Maria Sachs.
Improvements to the 36-acre park include three lighted multipurpose fields that address the community’s athletic needs, paved fitness trail with 13 exercise stations, two group picnic shelters, a restroom and concession building, parking spaces for 251 cars, and other necessary infrastructure.
“Parks by their very nature are the centerpieces of every community,” said Parks and Recreation Director Eric Call. “We are so pleased to be opening the first phase of Canyon District Park—a demonstration of the County’s commitment to health, happiness, community and service to residents in the West Boynton area.”
The $11 million cost of phase I of the park is funded through a combination of Impact Fees and Infrastructure Sales Tax proceeds. Phase II is expected to move forward by the spring of 2023 and be completed by early 2024. Plans for the second phase of the project include additional baseball/softball fields with batting cages, concession building, destination playground, picnic pavilion, parking, and restrooms.
Canyon District Park is operated by the Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department. The park is open every day from sunrise to sunset. Lighted, permitted athletic fields open until 10:00 pm.
