Pine Glades Natural Area is closed to the public at this time while crews are out conducting a prescribed fire operation. This controlled burn will cover approximately 1,553 acres. Due to the size of this operation, a helicopter will assist in the ignition of the unit and smoke may be visible from several miles away. ERM's Prescribed Fire Burn Crew will be on site keeping the fire controlled along with assistance from Florida Forest Service as needed.
A prescribed burn is an intentional fire set under carefully controlled conditions to achieve certain land management objectives. The primary objectives of this burn are to enhance and maintain the slash pine forest (a fire-dependent ecosystem) and lower the possibility of a destructive wildfire by reducing the fuel load (dense palmettos and downed trees).
