Palm Beach County recently completed an audit by the Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC) to become recertified as a Silver-Level Green County. The County first became certified by FGBC in 2012, thanks to the efforts of several County Departments, led by Facilities Development and Operations (FDO).
The FGBC is a non-profit Florida corporation that qualifies building projects and programs as “green” based on meaningful and clear principles. The FGBC Green Local Government Standard designates Green Counties for “outstanding environmental stewardship” that will help the County reduce costs and promote better cross-department communications.
The FGBC Green Local Government Standard covers areas as diverse as minimizing chlorine use in County swimming pools, reducing Fire Rescue’s use of potable water, and curtailing stormwater runoff in recreational areas. As such, various County departments and related agencies collaborated on the recertification, including Resilience, Environmental Resources Management, Fire Rescue, Parks and Recreation as well as the Palm Beach Transportation Planning Agency.
With this recertification, the County has demonstrated its continuing leadership in sustainability and resilience, and an ongoing commitment to environmental best practices.
