Honor Guard Candidate AcademyThe Honor Guard Candidate Academy (HGCA) graduated Class 02 in August 2024. The HGCA is designedas a path to bring new members into the ranks of the Honor Guard.Prior to HGCA 01 in 2020, firefighters interested in becoming a member of the Honor Guard would simply observe and shadow members at events and participate in training prior to step-off.Once they had become proficient in the details and precision movements, they were placed as part of the event line-up. There was no set timeframe for this to occur, and it was dependent on the number of events available to attend and meet that level of proficiency.With the HGCA, prospective members go through formal, structured training in flag etiquette, marching, posting Colors, casket watch, facing motions, axe and pike pole maneuvers.30
