Avoiding the Holiday Blues

Holidays are supposed to be a time full of joy, good cheer, and bright hopes. Unfortunately, for some people this is not so. Some common reasons people experience the holiday blues include; increased stress and tiredness, unrealistic expectations, too much commercialization, overcrowding in shopping areas, and unpleasant holiday memories. What can you do to avoid or cope with the holiday blues?

Here are some ideas to help you avoid the holiday blues:

  • Keep holiday expectations realistic. Examine your personal holiday-related expectations and priorities for housekeeping, gift-giving, decorating, food, as well as visiting friends and family.
  • Plan well in advance. Make a detailed, prioritized list of necessary items and activities. Involve others in preparing and implementing the plan.
  • Pace yourself. Don't take on more activities than you can realistically handle and still enjoy the holiday.
Spend time with people who are supportive and who care about you.
Maintain year round some of the holiday activities you enjoy. Spread out beyond the holiday period those things that brought you joy and happiness.
  • Try to maintain a balanced diet, get plenty of rest, and exercise regularly.
