MBK members represent the nonprofit, public and private sectors and are engages in a range of activities to improve life outcomes for boys and young men of color. These activities include direct service, advocacy, funding, research, strategic communications and capacity building.

Mentoring Agency Requirements


Agencies must be registered with the School District or United Way in order to receive MBK referrals. An agency representative must also attend an orientation. Orientations are designed to:

  1. Identify resources available for participating agencies
  2. Provide an overview of the Male Recruitment Challenge
  3. Provide an overview of the goals for MBK, Child and Youth Symposium, and Superintendent’s Task Force
  4. Provide tips and instructions on how to get started

Types of Mentors

  1. One-on-One Mentor: will help young men and boys on an individual basis by being paired with a mentee. Mentors require criminal background check and must comply with agency policies.
  2. Group Mentor: can speak or provide workshops/trainings to various youth groups
  3. Professional Mentor: will allow youth to shadow them in the workplace. This is limited to agencies that offer this component.
