The Youth Services Department is part of the Workforce Pipeline Taskforce Committee, led by BeWellPBC. The intent of the collaborative efforts of behavioral health professionals, education and community stewards, and students is to grow and meet Palm Beach County's workforce needs now, and in the future, as well as to foster inclusion, diversity, and youth advocacy to build a more equitable workforce. Through BeWellPBC a behavioral health curriculum for Palm Beach County School District high school students, with an optional internship experience was created. Successful completion of the Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) track within the medical academy can result in high school students obtaining a certificate in Behavioral Health, thereby being trained and ready for hire upon graduation.
The Youth Services Department (YSD) was among the first agencies to pilot the BHT internship program for high school students during the 2023-2024 school year. Berlin Muñoz, a junior at West Boca Community High School, completed her BHT internship at the YSD's Education & Training Center. She was able to gain exposure to a community mental health setting and learn firsthand about some of the career options available to her within a behavioral health occupation path. Berlin received training on HIPAA, learned about local mental health agencies, contributed to promotional efforts, and helped organize therapy activities and materials. Upon completion of her internship, Berlin noted, “During my time at Youth Services, I have gained invaluable exposure to my field of interest. This internship has been an amazing opportunity which solidified my decision to become a psychologist." Given the dramatic increase in mental health needs across the nation and especially in Palm Beach County, inspiring and developing future behavioral and mental health workers will address critical needs of our community.
As a result of the success of the BHT internship pilot program, YSD will be accepting applications for another BHT intern during the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year. The Youth Services Department is committed to growing brighter futures by providing quality service, education and access to resources and opportunities. For more information on how to apply to the BHT internship program please reach out to your high school guidance team for more information.
