Per the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) distracted driving is anything that takes the driver’s attention away from the vital task of driving. There are three types of distraction: manual, which is taking hands off the wheel; visual, or taking eyes off the road; and cognitive, which involves taking one’s mind off driving. When you get behind the wheel you have only one job, and that’s to ensure you and your passengers reach your destination safely. In 2021 there were a reported 333 fatalities in Florida caused by distracted driving. On average there are more than 1,000 distracted driving crashes every week across Florida. Nationwide, nearly 80% of all crashes are related to driver inattention. With these statistics only increasing over time there are some tips to prevent distracted driving.

TIPS:
  • Put your phone out of reach, such as in the glove box, back seat or trunk.
  • Many phones allow you to set a Do Not Disturb feature – USE IT!
  • Pull over and park safely if you need to use your phone to talk or text.
  • Make a pledge to your family to never text or talk on the phone while driving.
  • Designate your passenger as your “designated texter.” Allow them access to your phone to respond to calls or messages.
