Community Services Department’s Payment Interface Saves a Tree

Body

In June, the Community Services Department (CSD) launched a paperless interface for the Division of Human Services’ client assistance payments for rental and utility assistance and cremation services.

Invoices for services are now processed electronically starting with the public-facing Online System for Community Access to Resources and Social Services (OSCARSS) system where clients apply for assistance and ending with electronic invoice to the Clerk’s Office. No paper is generated through this system.

As of August 6, CSD has processed 1,023 invoices electronically through this paperless interface. That is equivalent to 8,112 pieces of paper, 81.12 pounds of paper, or one tree and counting!

It takes approximately three gallons of water to make a single sheet of paper and 12 pounds of carbon dioxide to make one ream. CSD’s paperless process has saved over 24,000 gallons of water and 194 pounds of carbon dioxide, equating to a $486 savings in the cost of paper. Additionally, this process has saved at least 50 percent of operational time used to print and mail invoices.

CSD is proud to do its part to help the community and the planet. A special thank you to our friends at ISS who made this possible.
