Palm Beach County Breaks Ground on Green Cay Phase II

Body

Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking for Green Cay Phase II, which will include a park, education center and an advanced water purification facility. Both the future Green Cay Park and the Reclamation Education & Center for Advanced Purification (RECAP) will be the first in the state of Florida to use state-of-the-art reverse-osmosis treatment technology to produce purified water. The water will be treated to potable standards and will provide a next-generation model of reuse and aquifer recharge to meet the needs of future growth in Palm Beach County.

The groundbreaking event was held in western Boynton Beach at the site of what will become Green Cay Park, with a planned connection to the popular Green Cay Wetlands. Grant funding for the project came in part from the Florida State Department of Environmental Protection, South Florida Water Management District and from funding secured by State Senator Tina Polsky and State Representative Kelly Skidmore during Florida's 2023 Legislative Session. “We must protect our water," said Mayor Maria Sachs, whose commission district includes the project site. “This is a project that underscores and shows the world what Florida can do with our water, with our wildlife and with the beautiful environment that we have."

We are working together for the betterment of our community, and a community with no vision will perish," said Verdenia C. Baker, County Administrator. “Green Cay Phase II aligns with the county's strategic priorities: to drive economic growth, to protect our environmental resources and to develop and maintain our infrastructure to the highest standards." In addition to Mayor Sachs' and Ms. Baker's remarks, Governing Board Member of the South Florida Water Management District Charlette Roman and Assistant County Administrator Todd J. Bonlarron spoke at the groundbreaking event.

The program concluded with County officials, PBCWUD leaders and invited guests joining together for the ceremonial first shovel of dirt to commence groundbreaking of Green Cay Phase II. Construction will begin in early April, with a projected opening in late 2026.
