County Career Opportunities Showcased with Local Students

The Planning, Zoning and Building Department (PZB) was well represented at a recent event providing local high school students an avenue to explore local career opportunities upon graduation.

The Claim Your Future Showcase 2024 event, hosted by the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County, was held at the Palm Beach County Convention Center on Jan. 30th.

Representing PZB was MacArthur Megie, assistant deputy of inspections, and Jacqueline Luke, electrical inspector apprentice from the Building Division.

Over 1,200 high school seniors utilized the opportunity to engage in one-on-one discussions with government officials, industry professionals, business leaders, and local stakeholders. The aim was to explore potential career paths post-graduation.

According to Doug Wise, Building Division Director, the challenge of hiring and retaining quality employees prompted the creation of a four-year paid apprenticeship program. This initiative, which includes on-the-job training, is designed to prepare candidates for various positions including state licensure as Plans Examiners or Building Construction Inspectors. Wise expressed pride in the program's success, highlighting the transition of several apprentices to full-time employees.

Luke, an apprentice herself, shared her career journey at the event. Having faced a career crossroad two years ago, she seized the Apprentice opportunity and now imparts firsthand knowledge of the program to students. Luke remarked on the students' enthusiasm for learning about building safety careers and emphasized the empowering aspect of sharing her experience.

Megie echoed these sentiments, expressing privilege in encouraging and motivating the young adults.
