Description | What: Planting native wildflowers, weeding, installing bee houses
Where: Sawfish Island in the Loxahatchee River – Lake Worth Creek Aquatic Preserve in Jupiter
Duration: 7:30 a.m. – check-in and take boat to Sawfish Island – volunteers will be shuttled over in small groups - 8 am to 10:30 am – doing projects
Directions: We are meeting at Burt Reynolds Park – East Entrance at 805 U.S. Highway 1, in Jupiter. This park is just south of the U.S. Highway 1 bridge. Volunteers can exit I-95 at Indiantown Road (State Road 706) – head east on Indiantown Road to U.S. Highway 1 – turn left and head north for roughly ½ mile – parking lot is on the right – look for a white county truck to locate volunteer meeting area.
Additional Information: Volunteers will be installing native plants, installing bee houses and weeding in two separate areas of Sawfish Island. Please wear shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting wet and/or muddy. No flip flops or bare feet allowed. The plants will be installed in the upland areas of the restored island. Many of the work areas will be out in the open, so hats and sunscreen are recommended. Restroom facilities are available at Burt Reynolds Park – no facilities on Sawfish Island. The Department will supply tools, gloves, and refreshments. Event participation is limited to the first 15 volunteers who register.
Registration: The volunteer projects are designed for volunteers ages 16 and older. Volunteers 15 and under must be accompanied by parent or guardian.
