The primary goals of the Native Canopy Educational Program are to both increase the number of native trees and plants in Palm Beach County and to improve local awareness of their importance. Tree canopies provide many benefits including shading, cooling, community beautification, reduced erosion, and absorption of carbon dioxide (a global warming gas). They also provide food and shelter for wildlife. Appropriate landscape plantings and their best management can conserve water, improve water quality in your neighborhood and beyond, and reduce the need for insecticides, fungicides and herbicides. The program is funded by the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners and is collaboratively overseen by the University of Florida/IFAS, Palm Beach County Extension Service Department and the Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management Department.
The heart of the program is a free native plant giveaway to residential households, along with supporting information and educational presentations.
