Therapeutic Recreation Programs offers a wide variety of programs and activities to residents with varying abilities.Swim Lessons

Adaptive Swim Lessons - Youth/Adults/Seniors

2016 PROGRAM INFORMATION

Ages: 3 and over
Days/Times Classes are Offered (based on availability): April 5 – September 15
Monday and Wednesday: 9:00 am–12:30 pm
Tuesday and Thursday: 1:00–6:00 pm
Class Length: 20 minutes of instruction; 5-10 minutes of uninstructed playtime is provided at end of class for students to practice and learn through play.
Class Levels:

  • Pre-school
  • Learn to Swim Levels 1 & 2
  • If student has reached Level 3, we encourage them to join a Special Olympics Swim Team or continue with group instruction at another pool.

Maximum Enrollment/Ratios: 1:1, private instruction; Minimal space available; enroll early.
Fee: $55/6 class session (*fees cannot be refunded after classes begin, DPC vouchers are non-refundable and non-transferable)
Drowning Prevention Coalition Vouchers may be available on a limited basis for qualified families. Vouchers can be used to pay a portion of the swimming lesson fee. To determine whether your child qualifies you must take a survey.

Class Information: Lessons are for individuals with physical and developmental disabilities (siblings can participate if sessions do not reach capacity). Instructors are certified in Adapted Aquatics and teach the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program.
Program emphasizes water safety and foundational swimming concepts. Skills are adapted for each participant’s ability. Success in the program will depend on consistency of participation, swimming outside of class time, and whether the participant is developmentally ready to swim.
Days are not made up for missed classes (two make-up dates are provided at the end of each session for weather cancellations and excused absences).

Registration: Call Dan Ross at (561) 966-7022. Registration is completed on a first-come, first-served basis and will not be accepted until 9:00 am on the start date listed below. Registration can be completed by walk-in or by phone.

Registration Limits:
Registration will be limited to two sessions per student (12 classes) during the 2016 season. A waiting list will be kept for students interested in a third session.
If space is available after all interested students have attended two sessions, then waiting list participants will be contacted.

Registration and Class Dates schedule for 2017 will be posted when available.


Aqua Motion

This low impact class consists of walking and stretching in a heated pool. The class is an easy way to add moderate exercise to your daily routine. Benefits may include stretching and toning muscles, increasing circulation, improving mobility, and reducing stress.

Ages: Adults/Seniors of all abilities (Teens welcome to join)
Days: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Program Dates: April 1 - Sept 30, 2016
Time: 9:00-9:55 am
Location: Gleneagles Country Club Aquatic center at the CMAA Therapeutic Recreation Complex

Maximum Enrollment: 25

Family SwimSwim Lessons

Family SwimThis program is designed for all ages to relax, play, and have fun splashing around with family members while making new friends. Open swim time is for individuals with disabilities and their family members. Families can swim in shallow area when other water programs are not occurring.

Sailing

SailingParticipants ages 8 and up with disabilities will receive professional instruction, learn sailing terminology and the skills necessary to Swim Lessonscompete.

Scuba Instruction

*New Program

This summer the Therapeutic Recreation Section will be offering an adapted scuba experience program for persons age 8 and older with physical and/or developmental disabilities.  The program will be offered at the Gleneagles pool and will be run by Diveheart, a well known adapted scuba organization.  All Diveheart instructors and volunteers are Adapted Scuba Certified.  There is no fee to participate in this program, however all registration forms and medical information need to be completed prior to participating.  Participants are scheduled on a first come, first serve basis.  If you are interested in experiencing the wonders of scuba diving please contact Michelle Nelson for more information at (561) 966-7016 or MMNelson@pbcgov.org.


Summer Pool Parties

Join us at the pool for a little fun with your friends.  There will be music, a variety of pool activities, contests and light snacks.

Water Exercise

This class is designed for individuals with mobility impairments and is modified for each participant. The class is recommended for individuals who use wheelchairs or other equipment for mobility. Assistance is provided as needed for entering/exiting the pool and to help participants feel comfortable in the water on the first  day.
