Freshwater eco-treasures
Shallow freshwater wetland sloughs once extended 30 miles up and down the western side Atlantic Coastal Ridge (in the vicinity of present day I-95) in Palm Beach County. Over time, these wetlands and floodplains were dredged, filled, and channelized to accommodate development. What remains is known as the Chain of Lakes - Lake Mangonia, Clear Lake, Pine Lake, Lake Clarke, Lake Osborne, Lake Eden, and Lake Ida. Connected through various canals these lakes store and move stormwater, serve as water supply reservoirs, create recreational opportunities, and provide habitat to wading birds and other wildlife.
ERM has conducted many shoreline enhancement projects in those Chain of Lakes with public access - Pine Lake, Lake Osborne, and Lake Ida - increasing water quality and wetland habitat.
